Berks food safety inspections showed one snack bar had evidence of rodent activity

Berks County is divided into three jurisdictions: Reading, Muhlenberg Township and the rest of the county. Reading and Muhlenberg Township have their own food safety inspectors and the rest of the county is inspected by Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture inspectors.
The results will be posted every other week. All food vendors are inspected at least once a year. Other inspections can be triggered by a change of owner, a follow up if a facility had been out of compliance or by a complaint filed with the PDA.

If a food provider is labeled out of compliance, that means it has one or more violations that require a return visit by an inspector. The establishment is given time to fix the problem(s) and remains open for business.
Below are the results of inspections conducted between June 21 and July 4, 2023, that were filed in the state database as of July 6 at 3 p.m.
Giavanna’s Pizzeria, 1500 New Holland Road E3, Reading, June 30: three violations. Observed clean food bowls in stove area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). Corrected. Ceiling in the walk in cooler area is made of painted cement and is cracked/ peeling and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface and must be repaired. Entrance door located in the front area of the food facility has a large middle gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals. This is a repeat violation.
Zhuang’s Garden, 2834 Penn Ave., West Lawn, June 30: two violations. Observed sides/tops of cooking equipment in the kitchen area, with encrusted grease and soil accumulation. Ansul and hood venting system has heavy grease/sludge build up and must be cleaned before use as per township fire marshall. Fire Marshall to follow up with cleaning company. Food facility has not installed a grease trap as required under the local / state plumbing codes. Grease traps in facility are not connected to drain lines properly. Referred to local municipality for follow up.

Redner’s Warehouse Market #89, 1970 New Holland Road, Kenhorst, June 28: six violations. Bulk donut case at bakery did not have the allergen warning statement label. Corrected. Observed deeply scored cutting boards in produce prep room not resurfaced or discarded as required. Customer produce display case has a stagnant water/sludge build up along bottom drain area. Mop sink has a hose attachment that is hanging below the flood rim of the sink and not an appropriate air gap. Corrected. Waste receptacle for disposable paper towels not provided at the handwashing sink in bakery area. Floor in dairy cooler has a large gap with exposed wood that is not a smooth, easy-toclean surface and should be repaired.
Schmeck’s Villa, 4581 Boyertown Pike, Reading, June 28: five violations. Observed several food items stored directly on the floor in the walk-in cooler, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Observed an accumulation of grease and old food debris on some surfaces of the fryers and on the floor under the fryers. Food facility has an original food manager certificate posted, but the location is not conspicuous for public viewing. Two sets of lights are not shielded or shatter proof in the kitchen area. Employee personal items (lotion, hand sanitizer) were observed stored on top of the salad bain marie. Corrected.

Floor tiles in the ice machine area is made of tiles that are cracked/broken with wood floor exposed and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface and must be repaired.

Low light intensity in the ware washing area. Employee restroom is locked and not accessible to employees at all hours of operation. Restroom was not accessible at the time of inspection.
