PORT HOPE, ON (August 25, 2023) – The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit (HKPR District Health Unit) would like to commend Food for Kids City of Kawartha Lakes (Food for Kids CKL) on their commitment towards successfully implementing Student Nutrition Programs (SNPs) at all 32 local public schools.
Food for Kids CKL is a non-profit community partnership that works to ensure all children attend school well nourished as well as promoting healthy eating habits in our children and youth. A non-profit endeavor, the organization unites various resources to ensure children and youth have access to safe, nutritious, and personally acceptable food to optimize their learning potential. Through strategic fundraising and successful grant applications, they championed the Student Nutrition Programs by contributing $5,876 towards local food purchases and $10,367 for vital equipment during the 2022-23 school year. “This dedication to nutrition has been pivotal in ensuring that 10,227 students have access to essential meals and snacks, with a remarkable total of 723,507 meals and snacks served through student nutrition programs,” said Kimberley Leadbetter, Public Health Dietician with the HKPR District Health Unit. “Food for Kids CKL stands as a testament to the power of community partnerships."
The collective effort to provide a nurturing environment for students extends beyond the confines of the school system. The City of Kawartha Lakes Fire and Rescue Service Volunteer Firefighters organized their annual toll road fundraiser on May 13, 2023, raising $2,064 in support.
The impact of these contributions is immense. "Student nutrition programs generally operate on tight budgets, so this donation will really help schools stretch their food dollars," commented Megan Curran, Community Development Coordinator with the Food for Kids CKL. “The funds collected are allocated to procuring fresh, locally sourced food for the Student Nutrition Programs, as well as assisting in the acquisition of much-needed kitchen supplies.
Recognizing the far-reaching benefits of nourishing meals within educational settings, Kimberly Leadbeater, Public Health Dietitian with the HKPR District Health Unit, highlighted, "Access to nourishing food at school contributes to students’ success. Having the ability to enjoy a balanced meal or snack with school peers enables children and youth to build positive eating habits and be prepared for a full day of learning."
By fostering healthy eating habits and ensuring access to nourishing food, the Food for Kids City of Kawartha Lakes have laid a foundation for brighter futures and enhanced learning experiences.About Food for Kids City of Kawartha Lakes Food for Kids City of Kawartha Lakes is a non-profit community partnership that brings together local resources to ensure children and youth in the area have access to safe, nutritious, and personally acceptable food to optimize their learning potential.
